After I got a stage 2 invitation to Diro Systems, I started to prepare for a tech interview only to pay attention to the email and saw it was going to be in an open day recruitment format. “Hmm, what was that”? I asked myself. I and most of the other delegates turned up early for the open day (the recruitment process so far suggested coming late was not going to get you brownie points at this company!). Though the program was to start at 8:00 AM, Mr. Paddy Anigbo, the CEO/MD of Diro Systems suggested we get started. He started by telling us about what an open day was and what to expect and when he noticed everyone was still a bit tense, he broke the ice in the only way you could in a room full of young Nigerians — talking about what happened in the EPL during the weekend which got everyone fired up instantly. We all spoke about football for about 5 minutes while we did our registration after which we were supposed to have breakfast but the delivery vendor was running late so we voted to start and do a breakfast break when the vendor arrives. We gathered our choice of coffee, tea or juice and at this point most of us had gotten so comfortable at Diro Systems that we forgot it was an interview we came there for.

We officially started with a TEDxEuston Talk watched via a projector by Cobhams Asuquo.A very inspiring talk on the topic “The gift of Blindness”. This was a really interesting talk by Cobhams during which he made us understand that if we are used to giving excuses for failing, it’s time to stop as a failure should never be excused. He also spoke about how important it is to trust even when we had no reason to and finally we should go blind in a lot of things to be focused. It was an amazing talk from Cobhams after which we did have breakfast while Mr. Paddy did a short briefing on Diro Systems.

Chidinma, the company’s Sales Executive, spoke about her first year at Diro Systems. Her short talk centered on the team ethic she met at Diro Systems and how much she had learnt and become much better in just one year. Next, up, Uju, the company’s accounts executive, described how she came into the job scared at the enormity of the challenge set for her role but since grew quickly into it thanks to the support of everyone around her. It seemed teamwork was at the center of being successful at this company. Following this, we were treated to a project example presentation by one of the senior project engineers, Fortune Okwudili. You could see why Diro Systems has delivered successful projects with his presentation on installation on IVS.

We rounded up with a team exercise focusing on looking into 2017 and the opportunities in the tech sector broken down into three sessions which included opportunities for tech in a recession, challenges to anticipate and innovation in a challenging environment. It was a mixture of learning and interactive brainstorming in which no one was exempted from after which, we had lunch. I know right “we just had an interview!” Lunch was a mix of networking, exchanging contacts and having a good laugh. What did I think of the whole concept? My expectations were fully surpassed and I would encourage more Nigerian companies and organizations to pick up the “open-day recruitment system” into their recruitment phases. And it wins an A in ratings in my opinion which if you know me personally you’d know when I say it’s good, it’s good.
